How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

You'll need a cell phone that can send and receive text messages for this one. Don't know how to text? Bring along a child or grandchild and they'll be able to guide your way.

Welcome to SEDC, the Southwest Educational Development Center, or my office. I wanted to place one close to work so that it would always be maintained. We provide educational services for the 6 counties in the southwest corner of the state.

I am a technology trainer, so I thought that I'd integrate a little of today's technology into this one. Thanks to ZerØ for giving me the idea for this type of challenge.

TO FIND THIS CACHE:

There is a telephone pole at the listed coordinates. On this pole is a yellow sign about 6.5' off of the ground. There are 3 lines of text on the sign. You will need the word on the top line, and the digits of the large numbers of the third line.

On your cell phone, create a text message. The message needs to be sent to the number 23559, which is the "short code" number for the Cel.ly service. In the message area, start with an '@' symbol, then without a space enter the word on the top line of the sign, followed without a space by the sum of the individual digits of the last line.

For example, if the word on the top line was "Geocaching" and the numbers on the bottom were "12345" you would enter "@geocaching15" in the message.

Now, send the message! In a few seconds, you'll get a text message response with the coordinates to the second and final stage. Plug those into your GPS, and you're on your way!

Container is a camoed peanut butter jar with room for small trackable and trading items. Please replace the container as you found it, and let me know if there is any maintenance that needs to be done - I'm here every day of the week!

If you get stuck, need help sending a text message, or just want to say hello, feel free to enter the white building to the East and ask for the GPS Guy! They'll know who you are talking about.
