Geocache Description:

Ponteix

This excellent little musuem contains artifacts of 10,000 year old Plains Indians. The collection is considered one of the best in all of North America. It includes awls, arrowheads, atl-atls, scrapers, and knives - that show the evolution of weapons and tools through the centuries. The many hundreds of items are arranged in an artistic and modern display. It is well worth the small entrance fee.

Also in the same building (the most modern building in Ponteix) is the Centre Culturel Royer (French Cultural Centre) which is very interesting also. Go inside and check it out!

Cache is outside the building. Permission is given. Container is a small can.

Museum entrance is available 9-5 Mon--Fri. and weekends with a phone call.

Check out the museum website for photos and info:

The ancient peoples who first moved onto the plains weren't folowing the buffalo...they were after huge wooly mammoth. As land newly freed from glacial ice came back to life, people began a slow migration north over the Great Plains - hunters in pursuit of their prey. As the eons passed and the mammoth died off, buffalo became the hunters' prey. The buffalo provided all the necessities of life: meat for food, bones for tools, hides for clothing and tents and a powerful symbol for tribal myths. And so the buffalo hunt, developed and refined over thousands of years, became the centre of Plains Indian culture.
