Geocache Description:

Small camo-taped plastic container containing logbook and pencil. Room for a few small trade items. Cache is a very short distance from the road, but requires crossing over a few big rocks, therefore the difficulty rating for some. Parking roadside, although there is a small pull-off just near the bridge with room for 1 car). Looks like a great fishing spot!

Cook's Mill Road acts as a connection between the Guelph Radial Trail (trailhead on Watson Road south of Stone Road) and the Guelph-Eramosa River Trail, which runs north from Stone Road (trailhead on Stone Road near the Bow Bridge).
This is an excellent hiking/biking trail with many caches and letterboxes along the way.

The cache is near the ruins at the river's edge. Here is just a bit of history of the woollen and saw mills in the area:

In 1869, John and Thomas Arkell, sons of Thomas Arkell erected the woollen mill and saw mill on Lot 1, Concession 9, 1.5 miles West of Arkell village. About 9 years later John's young son, Thomas, lost an arm in the machinery of the woollen mill, after which the father sold out his share. This later became the property of the Taylors of Napanee and when destroyed by fire in 1912 it was owned by the Cartlidge family.
The first sawmill, however, was built in 1844 by a Mr. Caufield on the Speed River, one mile North of Arkell, Lot 2 R, 9 Con. A grist mill was also built on the property. These mills were sold to Haines and Scot, who sold them to John Cook in 1896. The son and daughter are still residing on the property and it is properly known as Cook's Mills.

Enjoy!
