The site of Mar-Elyas (Sain Elyas) is about 9Km to the North of Ajloun (about 1hour drive north of Amman), in a woodland surrounded by wild trees…about 900m above the sea level, offering an amazing scenery.
The name is thought to have relation with Prophet Elyas, who is mentioned in the Old Testament and the Quran- this thought is supported by the findings of inscription of the mosaic ground . The site of Mar Elyas is one of the most important historical places in Ajlun. The excavation work started in 1999; an enormous church was found (about 1340 m2 ) The site is part of the “Historical trees of Jordan project”, with some Quercus Calliprinos trees aging 200-450 years. Visiting hours: Summer: 8am-6pm Winter: 8am-4pm * Free Entry The cache is a small container (a bit smaller than camera film), containing a tiny pencil, a hair clip and of course the sheet log and the geo explanation
