Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the newly created Birch Creek Preserve. A scenic area along the Red Cedar river with a small trail system. Park and access at N 44° 51.075 W 91° 56.594. Cache can be found by foot about 1/4 mile from trailhead or from river.

Find a steep trail down to the mouth of the creek off the main loop. You are looking for a green Lock n' Lock container. Original Cache contained collecting cards, flashlight, keyless entry remote for a Jeep Cherokee, a Mexican coin, multi-color pen, a mini cassette tape, various trinkets, and and Jeep Travel Bug.

The preserve features a spring-fed stream which flows through a steep gorge flanked by sandstone cliffs. The springs contribute water to Birch Creek which runs over exposed bedrock, small waterfalls, and plunge pools before it joins the Red Cedar River.

The cold, clean spring water is known to support endangered and threatened species of fish near its outlet to the Red Cedar river. Birds such as the northern rough-winged swallow use the vertical sandstone cliffs as nesting cavities. Plant species include clintonia, bishop's cap, mountain maple, and maidenhair ferns as well as liverwort along the wet cliffs.
