Geocache Description:

Cache is an easy, basic hide located in Brookline, Vermont. Stealth will be needed at times- the town office near the cache is open Mon.+Wed. 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM and the 1st Sat. 9:00AM- 2:00PM. There are also houses in the area. This is a log only cache. Name and date only, please. Bring your own pen.

I placed this cache simply because I thought the old schoolhouse here was noteworthy enough to be of interest to many cachers. The schoolhouse is approximately 150 feet away from the cache site, diagonally across the road. For more info on the school go to this website- (visit link)
The schoolhouse was designed in 1821 by Dr. John Wilson (1788-1847), who had insisted upon his own design for the building as a condition of his employment to teach there. The schoolhouse was completed in 1822 and deeded to the town for $5.00. It's believed to be the only schoolhouse of this design in the country.
Dr. Wilson, who received his medical education at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, supposedly wrote that he had modeled the schoolhouse after the Old Tolbooth's Tower in Edinburgh. The Old Tolbooth was the medieval seat of the disbanded Scottish Parliament, and the symbol of political independence from England.
Dr. Wilson presided over at least the first year of schooling for approximately 60 students... all of whom received a "well-rounded" education.
Several years later, apparently from a death-bed statement, the town was shocked to learn that the respected doctor and teacher had previously led a "double-life", and before coming to this country and eventually to Brookline, he had been a notorious Scottish highwayman known as "Captain Thunderbolt" and he had a price on his head of five hundred pounds British Sterling, which was a small fortune at the time. Dr. Wilson's former friend and partner in crime, "Captain Lightfoot"a.k.a. Michael Martin(1795-1821) was caught and hanged in East Cambridge, Ma. in Dec. 1821. Before he was executed he made a long published confession of the exploits of "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot".
Now, nearly 200 years later, the school built by the reformed "Captain Thunderbolt" still stands... an interesting structure, and a tribute to the memory of a colorful, but complex, Vermonter.

Congratulations to FTF'er BevanQ!!
