Geocache Description:

A small series of caches following the Plymouth Airport Flight Path frequently used by the DASH 7 Aircraft. Collect clues for 'Plymouth Airport - Flight Bag' GC1QJZP from Plymouth Airport DASH -1,2,3,4,5,6 & finally DASH 7.

Aviation in Plymouth dates back to 1825 when two famous balloonists arrived to a crowd of 50,000. The couple were rescued by boat between Stoke Head and Realm point, but soon departed towards France 'never to be seen again.

In 1919 the first crossing of the North Atlantic was completed by a US Curtiss Flying Boat theLame Duck’ arriving on the Barbican from New York The flying time was almost 54 hours spread over 23 days

Plymouth Airport can trace its roots back to the early days of commercial flying. In fact the birth of the airport can be dated to 1923 when the first passengers joined a flight carrying mail to Croydon from a grass strip at Chelson Meadow. This successful flight, under the command of legendary air pioneer Alan Cobham inspired Plymouth City Council to look for a permanent site for the city’s airport.

In 1925 the now popular service, helping to speed transatlantic mail from the local port to the Capital, was moved to Roborough.Plymouth Airport had found its home and was given the Royal seal of approval with an official opening in July 1931 by the Prince of Wales.

The Whitney Straight Corporation leased the Airport from 1936 to 1939

The RAF took over the airfield in 1939 and nearby RAF Mount Batten took control.. The George Hotel, a public house that today overlooks the airfield was used as the Officer's mess and Nissan huts were built around it

The aircraft operator’s names have changed over the decades. Who remembers Western Air Express, Olley’s Air Service or Railway Air Services? Now in a new century air travel is no novelty but an essential part of West Country business life

The modern Plymouth City Airport provides business and private travellers with regular scheduled services to various parts of the UK including London Gatwick. . Brymon Aviation begin in 1972, flying to Newquay/Scillies and Newquay/Jersey using G-AXXJ, the Islander, which also flew a service to Morlaix.

In 1975 the runway 06/24 was covered in tarmac-previously it had been all grass. Dash-7`s were introduced in 1981
