Geocache Description:

Mini Cooper is now of an age where she can start to appreciate the finer things in life and in particular the fabulous scenery and stunning locations our Island has to offer. This is the fifth of her adventures and we hope you enjoy it as much as she did. The original cache contained a selection of trolley tokens, Geocache sew on patch and pin badge.

Today Mr. & Mrs. flyingmonkey took Mini Cooper (flyingmonkey) out for a walk as the weather was so lovely. The Sulby Reservoir is one place Mr. flyingmonkey has been meaning to take a walk round for some time now and what better excuse than to plant the next cache in the Adventures of Mini Cooper series. This area has some stunning views and even the chance of spotting some wildlife.

A little bit of history behind the reservoir.

The increasing numbers of visitors to Douglas in the late 1800s called for a more reliable source of water. The Clypse and Kerrowhoo Reservoirs had already been constructed to ease demand, but were not enough.

A single all island water authority was formed in 1974 after dry weather in the south and west prompted change in the event of droughts. The Sulby River was already under consideration as a possible reservoir and by 1976 the site was commissioned. The reservoir became fully operational in 1982 and is the largest reservoir on the Island. Its completion meant the almost complete redundancy of the Block Eairy Reservoir, which was built in the 1940s.

Sulby Reservoir has a capacity of 1,000 million gallons and is situated at Tholt y Will on the Sulby River. It is the largest Manx reservoir. There is good parking available at the below co-ordinates which is just off the A14 and a path leads from there to the Lhergy Rhennie area.

It is advisable to wear sturdy walking boots and wear warm clothes as even on the sunniest of days the wind blowing in of the water can be very chilly. Please take some time to sit and enjoy the views and you never know you may be fortunate enough to spot some of the local wildlife. Please take care when hunting for the cache and take note of the terrain rating and be sure to replace it exactly as found.
