Geocache Description:

At the site of the Hopewell Furnace, be prepared for about an hour long round trip. You’ll be crossing Yellow Creek a few times, so wear appropriate footwear. The trail is clear, but rocky in places with loose footing, so be careful. Finding the cache will require some hill traversing.

The Hopewell Furnace was a blast furnace built over 200 years ago. The remains of the furnace can still be seen today, jutting out of the hillside on the back of Hamilton Lake, overlooking Yellow Creek below.

The history of the furnace is fascinating (locals probably had to study it in local Ohio History classes). Check out the article by John White. It gives great information about the furnace.

The area around the furnace is truly remarkable as well. It is located on the back-side of Hamilton Lake and there are tremendous cliffs and waterfalls around the area. There are also some amazing stone bridge structures that carry large supply pipes from the lake down Yellow Creek.

Take a picnic lunch and eat it along the banks of the river. It’s a peaceful and amazing area of Youngstown.

** You’ll need to park in the Yellow Creek Park lot at the bottom of Wetmore and follow the Hopewell Furnace trail. Yellow Creek Park is about a 1/2 mile North of the cache location (See Waypoint on Cache Page). DO NOT park on the other side of the lake and cut across Aqua Ohio’s land. There are posted “No Trespassing signs” on that side.

From the parking lot, it’s about a 20-30 minute hike to the furnace. The GPS coordinates will take you really close. The cache is not in or part of the furnace so as not to disturb the historical structure at all. The trails will take you to the furnace.

Enjoy a great hike with wonderful natural scenery and some amazing local Ohio history.
