Geocache Description:

The cache is very near (but not spot on) the coordinates; this cache is about bringing you face to face with a bit of local history. Cache is located in a parking lot, right next St. Pauls Episcopal Church in downtown Suffolk, VA. There is easy and safe parking in the lot or on the street. Take the kids, they'll love looking for the cache and you'll have an opportunity share a bit of local history.

The hunt will take you to a low brick wall which defines the property of St Pauls Episcopal Church which was established in 1642. There are a series of stained glass windows on the side of the church you are facing. If you look closely, one will have a distinct pattern of the Confederacy as part of its design. The Virginian Pilot article, linked from the churchs www site describes the stained glass windows including the one you are looking for: "Also in the chapel is a stained-glass window showing a red-robed and helmeted angel carrying a sword and the scales of justice. It commemorates Gen. Laurence S. Baker of the Confederate Army and former members of St. Paul's, "Soldiers of the South," with the dates of the Civil War, 1861 to 1865." FYI: General Baker was the stationmaster for the now restored train station just down the road. The cache "Thomas wold be Proud, # GCZ4AF is located at the station. The General is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetary right next to the train station and within visual range of "Constantina Site," Cache GC1JQMP. The Generals grave stands out by virtue of its pyramid of black Cannonballs and the site is maintained by The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Tom Smith Camp #1702 of which I am a member. Visit the www site of the church which is included in this listing and walk around while you are there. The cache is very much about your discovery and becoming aware of this historic landmark. There are several excellent restraunts in the area within walking distance as well as several caches such as "Keep Looking, GC18RAE. Be sure to say hi to the original Mr. Peanut if you pass his monument! Face the Stars and Bars, extend your RIGHT ARM and rotate 90 degrees clockwise. Your arm will then point at the cache. 12/29: Thanks to Steve 'n Kim for doing a bit of maintenance on this one.
