This is a Learning Multi-Cache with a micro hidden nearby. The coordinates are for the turn-off into the fueling station owned by the county of Aiken. It is open for inspection, and the orange cones are there only to deter trucks from using it as a turn around, so come on in. Park in the designated parking area only ... unless you have a hydrogen fueled vehicle!
Why build a hydrogen fueling station if there are no hydrogen-powered vehicles? But how can there be any hydrogen-powered vehicles if there are no fueling stations? That Chicken-or-the-Egg dilemma is starting to be solved here, with the first hydrogen fueling station in the state. Along with another station, opened recently in Columbia, South Carolina is creating the “South Carolina Hydrogen Freeway”. Hydrogen may be the solution to our dependence on foreign oil to power our cars and trucks. This location was selected for the first hydrogen fueling station in the state due to the local expertise in related technologies at Savannah River Site, the location of synthesis and purification of tritium (a radioactive isotope of hydrogen) used in the US arsenal of Hydrogen Bombs during the Cold War.
The Sage Mill facility is unique in that it is located adjacent to Bridgestone/Firestone, which is currently using hydrogen fuel cell forklifts. It is hoped this new station will contribute to the development of hydrogen infrastructure in the region and be a catalyst for its use across the country.
