Required History Lesson (I'll keep it short)
When eighteen year old George Lamley drowned in 1895, his parents, Job and Sarah laid him to rest in the orchard of their hilltop farm. Several years later after the death of her husband, Sarah donated the land for use as a community cemetery. Originally called Riverside Cemetery, it later became known as Washington Cemetery.
For several decades it was a lovely spot and gradually came to be the final resting spot for more and more local pioneers. But as the years passed and a larger cemetery was developed a few miles away, this place fell into neglect. Several markers were made of wood, they have long ago rotted away. Some have been replaced while others have completely disappeared. Many stones have toppled over, some lie under fallen trees, countless others are hidden in the undergrowth.
The neighbors have tried to keep it maintained... But they need help.
What can we do?
Lets meet there on June 7th and go to work.. The idea is that each person or team select whatever plot you prefer and adopt the pioneer who rests there for the day... Fix the plot up as best as you can. There are more than enough sites to go around, some will be fairly easy to fix, others will take more work, so choose according to your physical ability and spread out so we can clean as many as possible.
Be sure to mention the name of your adopted pioneer when you log your visit.. and maybe post some before and after photos.
What tools do we bring?
Team Squarehead will supply some larger pruning tools and a small chain saw. it would be great if you bring whatever small gardening tools you can and gloves. Dress for the occasion... shorts and open sandals would not be a wise choice.
What about snacks?
We will supply hot dogs, condiments, and chips along with an assortment of cold beverages... non alcoholic of course. Other than that, you're on your own.
If you plan to attend:
Please leave a note below and let us know how many will be in your party so we can plan accordingly.
