Geocache Description:

ABANDONED HELICOPTER MUSEUM

The cache is placed near an abandoned airfield. Several old (and famous) soviet-time helicopters have their last parking in the middle of forest.
Please note that the cache is located out of EU in Russian Federation. It's about fifty kilometers far from the Finland-Russia frontier and not farther than one kilometer aside from Vaalimaa - Vyborg highway (M10).


HISTORY AND DETAILS

This place was a training airfield and a technical base of Vocational Technical School of Civil Aviation on Vyborg . It was established in the middle of 1960-x at the place of a former military runway used during Winter War and Second World War.



This area was a former Finnish airfield. Actually the first scheduled flights in Finland by AERO were from Helsinki to Tampere and to Viipuri (Viborg) in 1937. (Thanks to KasI0 who mentioned it in the log).

In the last years the airfield seemed to be like a museum for students of Civil Aviation Technical School. Now it's almost dormant and used very rarely. The territory of the airfield is paled by barbed wires but you can get to the fence pretty closely to see the helicopters from a couple of meters:



Furthermore, there are a lot of holes in the fence so most brave persons may try to get on the field and take pictures like these:

It looks like the territory is completely desolate and there are no people around.
But please keep in mind that generally you are not allowed to get through the fence.

If you decided to look at the helicopters closer:
  • do not walk far on the field, just several meters from the fence
  • do not touch anything and do not get into cabins
  • keep silence, do not make any noise
  • be ready to go back quickly
The cache is out of the fence so it's accessible in any way!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS
If you go from Vyborg to Vaalimaa by M10 you should keep right at N60 44.049 E28 37.452 and take a parallel (to M10) road. Then turn right at N60 43.885 E28 37.136.
At N60 44.282 E28 36.571 there is a hole in the fence to the field.

WINTER TIME
At winter time the unpaved road from M10 to the airfield may be not clear so you may have to walk about 1 km. The cache's spot also may be not easy to get but I hope it's not impossible.
