Geocache Description:

An easy traditional cache just off the road in a reserve.

The Knob Reserve, a 56 hectare park within the town boundaries of Stratford, includes part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail. ‘Bataluk’ is a Gunai (Kurnai) word for lizard, as the trail winds through East Gippsland like a tail of a lizard, extending from Sale through to Mitchell River national Park, Bairnsdale, Orbost and Cape Conron in the east.

The Knob Reserve was used as a meeting place for the clans within the Gunai (Kurnai) tribe as the reserve was situated near a boarder of two clans, the Brayakoolong and the Tatungooloong clans.

The reserve has examples of the early inhabitant’s culture, such as ‘canoe trees’ whereby bark was removed from trees to make canoes, shelters, shields, food bowls and infant carriers.

In the south-west corner of the reserve, at the top of the hill, examples of grinding stones can also be seen.

The current day reserve is used by various community groups for club activities. The reserve is also home to the Stratford Pony Club which use the reserve for their clubrooms and meetings. The Knob Reserve is also host to an annual country music festival.

Facilities at the reserve include picnic areas and toilets. There is water available but this is not recommended for drinking. There are walking tracks throughout the reserve and works are currently under way to join the knob reserve to the apex park (at the entrance to town at the Avon River) via a walking track. At any time of day locals can be seen walking through the reserve – be careful not to be seen caching.

Spend your time here walking through the reserve. There are many species of trees and shrubs along with abundant birdlife. Reptiles also enjoy the reserve so on warmer, sunny days be mindful of snakes.

There are areas of the reserve that are considered culturally sensitive, please treat this place with respect. The Knob Reserve is closed at sunset each evening so this is a daylight hours cache only. There is ample parking throughout the reserve. It is suggested you park your vehicle inside the gates to the reserve and walk around to appreciate the reserve. Stick to formed tracks whilst driving.

The cache is a 1 litre camo Sistema container. It contains logbook, pen and swappables. Please replace it as found and be careful of prying muggles!

Have a look at the canoe tree towards the lookout - at S37 59.001 E147 05.950.
