Christianskirken
bygget i gammel nordisk stil. Tagkonstruktionen er den samme som i
vikingehallerne.
2. verdenskrig.
Kirken har omkring 1.000 siddepladser.
Christianschurch
The Church is the first one in Scandinavia to be built in Old Norse
style. The roof construction is the same as the one you would find
in the Viking halls, and the same which has survived in the Faroese
smoke rooms (kitchens) and in the Faroese village churches. This
open roof construction has proved to be especially suitable for
church buildings, as the acoustics in this church is better than in
any other of a similar size.
On the west gable there is a window of stained glass, which
represents Christ as the leading power of the world. The Danish
artist Mrs. Ulrikke Marseen made the rosette, and “Statens
Kunstfond” donated it.
To build the church has cost about £ 200.000, about half of the
amount was given by “Fondet til Fædrelandets Vel”. The congregation
provided the other half. The patron of the fond mentioned was the
late Dansih king Christian X, and therefore the church was given
the name Christianskirkjan. The church is dedicated to the memory
of the sailors who lost their life during Second World War.
The church can seat about 1.000 people, but on the day of the
consecration, the 7th of July 1963, in the presence of His Majesty
King Fredrik IX and his three princesses, there were a lot more
people present.
The organ, designed by Peter Koch and built in 1974 by Jensen &
Thomsen, Hillerød Denmark, has 29 stops.
