A short walk through a bit of bush. DO NOT attempt this from
Highway 17!
The cache container is an ammo can (now a cammoed peanut butter
jar). When hidden, the cache contained a variety of goodies. There
is a logbook to sign and a FTF prize of a $5 Timmy’s card.
There is also a TB that is eager to start her journey.
Previous to 2004, the Broad-tailed Shadowdragon (Neurocordulia
michaeli) was only known from parts of New Brunswick and Maine. In
2004 the species was discovered in two spots in Ontario, one of
which was in this section of the Petawawa River. This remains one
of the best spots to see this dragonfly. It is seldom seen perched,
and like other members of its genus, it flies typically only at
dusk over rivers. The male displays greenish-yellow eyes of a
unique color. Based on global conservation status ranks
Neurocordulia michaeli is ranked as being at high risk of
extinction due to a very restricted range and few populations and
is therefore the most globally imperiled species of dragonfly
occurring in Ontario.
Congrats to YorkDiver for
FTF!
