Sometimes a bridge over troubled water. Lots of muggles in the area when the weather is nice.
The Frank and Poet drain is part of the Combined Downriver watershed. It runs through several downriver communities and empties into the Huron River and eventually into Lake Erie. The stream width varies from 10 to 15 feet and under normal conditions, the water depth ranges from a few inches to several feet. The Frank and Poet is used primarily for storm drainage. Running along the drain is a basin to accommodate excess runoff. Since this basin floods during times of heavy rainfall, it is not used for residential purposes, but rather the area is used as recreational park grounds. Nearby are ball diamonds, soccer fields, roller hockey rinks and a paved bike trail that runs along the creek. During the heaviest rains, the areas around here more closely resemble a lake than a stream. The huge surges in flow that follow rain and snow melts cause stream banks to erode and sediment to be deposited in the river and downstream. Just to the North of this area, you will see the results of the Frank and Poet Stream Bank Restoration project organized by the Friends of the Detroit River. The project included a shoreline stabilization component where over 20 cubic yards of topsoil was spread over the worksite, 20 pounds of a wet tolerant wild flower and indigenous prairie grass seed mix was broadcast and over 3000 sq ft of high quality double sided erosion control coconut matting was laid out, staked down and toed in with several tons of limestone cobble. The area now provides a beautiful background for those summer evening strolls and bike rides along the trail.
