Geocache Description:

Or “End of the Line!”. This is a traditional cache designed to get you along a lovely pleasant walk on the route of the Old railway from Easton towards Weymouth. Why End of the line??? Well the line did not end here, but it’s as far as you can go before you reach the former MOD now Portland Port Property.

It is a flat (ish) walk of about 1.75 miles from the suggested parking to the cache. The route will allow you to take in a number of other caches. From the suggested parking, take the footpath across the road to the right to take in St Andrews Church Ruins. The other recommended route is across the road to the left taking the road past the museum. This is an ideal cache route for cyclists and pushchairs. On the return route if you fancy getting the lungs stretched take the footpath locally known as Donovans Drain back to the top of the Cliff (You can do our Why oh Why! cache from here!) A bit of history!!:- The Construction of the Weymouth and Portland railway started at the end of 1862 and was completed by April 1864 and the line opened on 16 October 1865. In 1866 another line, the Easton and Church Hope, was proposed on the other side of the Isle of Portland. Initially it was to link Portland's quarries to the sea. This line was started but powers expired in 1872 and the line lay dormant for eleven years. In the meantime an Admiralty railway was built from the end of the Weymouth and Portland line to a pier on the new Admiralty Breakwater, mainly to supply coal to ships. The Easton and Church Hope line was revived and construction began in 1888. When it did the work involved blasting through three and a half miles of solid rock in a task taking twelve years. A new station was opened at Easton in 1900. The line opened to passenger traffic on 1 September 1902. There is a FTF prize of a very apt "2012" trolley coin, as this is where the Olympic Sailing events will be held
