Geocache Description:

Take a look at the picture below. This was the former Water Police site. In the picture you will see that the site is under construction.

History of the WATER POLICE SITE.

The site forms part of the Darug Nation and the area occupied by the Wangal Clan group.

1795. Following European settlement, the land was issued to Thomas Jones. Records show the land remained unoccupied until 1799.

1799. Macarthur purchased the land and named the area Pyrmont, with the area’s freshwater springs reminding him of mineral springs in Germany.

1836. Macarthur’s death saw the land subdivided.

1876. Some of the land is leased to a shipyard and Sydney Municipal Council resumes the land at the end of Harris Street. Reclamation takes place and a six-storey sandstone woolstore is built.

1919. A timber works occupies most of the peninsular, more of the harbour is reclaimed and a four-storey mill building, brick chimney and wharves are built. The proposed park site remained as part of the Macarthur family estate until 1929.

1929. Sydney Harbour Trust purchased the site from the Macarthur estate, along with neighbouring leases. Further harbour reclamation took place, wharves and access roads were built allowing vehicles to access the wharf from Harris Street.

1992. The Water Police occupy the site.

2003. City West Development and Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority proposals to develop the site as mixed residential and commercial use are met with community opposition.

2005. City of Sydney acquires the site with plans to restore the harbour foreshore, retain public open space and create a community park.

The Pyrmont harbour foreshore parkland is almost complete and to get you there I have placed this cache. What do the think of the transformation? Your comments please.
