Levada da Negra
1st of May - Workersday
It wasn’t my objective to take part on manifestations on that day. But nevertheless I was busy with a hard job, to place this cache. I went from Funchal up to Poço da Neve along this wonderful Levada. Normally the ice-runners went down when they brought the ice from Poço da Neve down to Funchal. More about this you can learn in the description of the cache “Poço da Neve” GC1BZGX.
This is a levada for hikers who prefer less traffic on their tracks (contrary to “25 fontes”), and if the weather is fine you have breathtaking views. It’s not extremely dangerous. You only have to be accustomed to walk in the mountains. You start, or end in Barreira, a sub-municipality of Funchal. There’s public bus transfer to this place. More detailed information you can get in the hiking guides of Sunflower Books or of Raimundo Quintal (“Levadas and Walks on Madeira” available in several languages).
Be careful on days with dense fog. Except your GPS, the levada is your only orientation. If you want the track as a file in gpx-format, send me an e-mail (see my profile). Take enough to drink and to eat with you. Anorak and mountain boots are a must! The weather can change very quickly.
You can combine this cache with some other of the Buzicos da Madeira like Poço da Neve, Pico Arieiro, Nas Pedras, Passeio Duro and Pinha do Arieiro of Mario de Monti.
