I will give you a walk down memory lane as I remember the area back in 1960 when we moved to Short Heath, and I spent many hours playing here.
There were no trees this side of the canal, if you face Big Ben’s challenge 1, to your right was a quarry where a large pond formed at the bottom with very strange blue water which we called the blue lagoon. This area was then used for a council land fill for many years and later grassed over, which got very water logged, so Walsall council as usual came up with the great idea to create a golf coarse which was never used at great expense to the tax payer, then all the trees got planted to get rid of the water as we have it today.
By the bridge over the canal for many years in a tin hut lived a hermit called Jacob, having 2 goats and three dogs, so the bridge got called Jacob’s bridge.
Looking to your right again all you could see past the quarry was open fields, where an old lady Mrs Cox used to keep rescued horse.
Finally the pool behind you was full of small perch where we used to go fishing.
Good luck with this one.
CONGRATULATIONS TO PAZAUK ON FTF well done Pete
