Geocache Description:

There is ample parking at this spot, and it serves as a good starting point for many walks (and caches) in the Pentlands. Please do not enter the fenced off area! The cache is not there.

The name of the town of Carlops is thought to have come from a story of two witches, or carlines, called Jenny Barry and Mause who would jump between the two outcrops of rock in the village. These rocks were known as Carline's Loup, which eventually became Carlops.
Even in this day and age, the town of Carlops is associated with witchcraft. In February of 2000, British Telecommunications was in the process of building a mast in close proximity to Carline’s Loup. The local community protested the construction of this tower, due to the fact that Carlops is a conservation area. They were also worried about health risks to the people living in the area. BT ignored their protests. One night, the almost completed tower completely vanished! No one knows who could have pulled off such a remarkable feat, and when the locals were asked about it, they suggested that it was witchcraft. The full story can be read here: (visit link)
