This cache is located in a beatiful area of Rauðhólar - Red Hills only a few meters behind the last houses of Reykjavík. It requires a small walk but I highly recommend to everyone to stay there longer and just wander in between the hills and discover its many lakes and red rocks.
Beware: no serious rock climbing is required to find the cache but please mind your steps!

Raudholar are the remainder of a cluster of pseudocraters within the boundaries of the capital. They date back approximately 4600 years and are situated in the so-called Elliðaár lava field, northeast of Lake Elliðavatn. They were formed in a volcanic eruption in the crater Leiti. Hot lava flowed into Elliðavatn lake where it cooled suddenly and infused water in the form of steam. The stem turned the lava into slag, forming approximately 80 pseudocraters.
Rauðhólar are prominent because of their reddish colour. The scoria was coloured by the oxidation of the iron contents of the lava, when it overran bogs and small ponds on its way to the sea.
During the years of the Second World War, most of the construction material mined there was used by the British occupation forces for the building of the runways of the Reykjavik Airport. In 1961 the rest of the craters was declared a national monument, and in 1972 the craters and a large area around them were proclaimed a nature reserve.
