Here, and north of the PWA parking lot, is an area that the locals call SANDY POINT. From the air it looks like an arrowhead and you are standing at the base.
In the 1870’s, when the first prospectors came to the area, it was an Ojibwa summer camp. Evidence has been found that shows ancient people also camped here.
In the late 1800's this area was known as Calumet Location- an area named for Calumet, Michigan and populated by the Corish miners who came from that part of Michigan to open up the Ely mines.
There were several public clubs located on the shores of Shagawa Lake (which was first named Long Lake) in the 1890’s. There was a 70 Ft. steam launch, named Steamer Paul, which left the Ely dock, and would make the rounds of these clubs. It was built in Duluth, shipped to Ely by train, and could carry 25 people. Many days in summer a local band would be hired to play on the launch as it made its excursions around the lake. There were also boat and canoe races, and in the winter there was skating on the lake.
Here on this site, in 1891, was a city park named Shagawa Park. It had a boathouse, dance hall, pavilion, swings, and changing houses for swimming (separate swim areas- men on one side of the point, women on the other). It was landscaped with trees and flower gardens. One sad note was that there was a Native American burial ground on site that was destroyed by people who had no respect for Native rites.
After, the expanding mines encroached upon the land and it became part of the Oliver Mining Company that used the park as a recreational area for families of its employees.
When Oliver was done with the land, it was sold and a man named Lietold built a seaplane base on it, which was later run by Pat Magie.
The point is now in private ownership as you can tell by the fences and signs.
