Devon Treacle Mines
The Treacle Mines were more than a myth. Treacle was the name which locals used, to refer to the black shiny specular Haematite which oozed from the rock underground in the Hennock/Mortenhampstead area of S.E. Dartmoor, Devon, England.
It literally seeped out of cracks in the rocks like treacle.
This material was mined to make rust proof paint, mostly for battleships. It is the sparkly substance found in Hammerite paint, though today it comes from other sources.
The most famous treacle mines were the Great Rock Mine complex near Hennock.
