“It is our hope that this wetland will, in some small way, help others to understand the value of all wetlands to our environment and our culture.”
- Leslie and David Bissett, 2008
The Bissett Wetlands have been constructed where once only a very small marsh area existed. Enhanced through contouring and the addition of a clay liner, the now much larger wetland should prove an oasis for aquatic life.
During the construction process, pond mud from a donor marsh east of Calgary was added to the edges of the new marsh. With this mud came the seeds of many aquatic plants which are already growing well. Mallards, Black-capped Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Boreal Chorus Frogs, Wood Frogs and many species of aquatic insects have already been observed in this wetland.
If you’re interested in learning more about wetlands, we strongly encourage you to walk the short (450 m) trail.
If you’re headed to Heritage Park for the day and want a “quick” park ‘n’ grab before entering the park gates, you may wish to send the rest of your family on ahead and arrange to meet them later, as this well-camo’d bison tube may take a while to find. Be sure to bring a pen or pencil to record your successful hunt!
