A sometimes steep hike up to the Brilliant Overlook. Be prepared
for about 330 meters of elevation gain. Although the mountain looks
pretty rugged there is a well groomed trail up the back of the
bluff. Hand rails and other aids make the climbing easier.
The reward. Amazing views of two valleys and the confluence of the
Kootenay and Columbia Rivers.
Follow the signs to the Castlegar Golf Course until you come to the
gated road at N49 18.065 W 117 37.316 The gate is open from 9 a.m.
until 9 p.m..
Follow this road to the Brilliant Substation parking lot at N49
19.222 W117 36.814. Follow the Skattebo Reach Trail until N49
19.577 W117 36.750 where you will to turn right and begin the climb
to the top.
The hike is a little over two kms long but there are many good
excuses to stop and catch your breath while taking in the scenery.
Don't forget your camera.
We hid the cache a short distance away from the main viewpoint so
if there are muggles that look like they will be there for a long
time (and who can blame them?) the cache can be found without being
watched. Shortly before arriving at the cache location you will
pass the trail that heads off to "The Vise" which offers views from
a slightly different angle.
