The Sheets Family of Riflemakers

Brothers David, William and Martin Sheets came to Ohio from North Carolina in 1806 and settled in Randolph Township. All were gunsmiths. Martin (1788-1850) married Mary "Mollie" Hoover on February 2, 1812 and they had seven sons and four daughters. The sons who lived into adulthood were Henry (1813-1896), Andrew (1814-1888), Jacob (1816-1902), Daniel (1820-1899) and John (1825-1913). Martin built a brick house and gun factory in Union. Early plat maps show Sheets' boring mill along the Stillwater River north of Union. Sheets long rifles were well-known in this area for their fine workmanship and beauty. It is reported that Martin Sheets had a contract to supply 100 rifles to the United States Government for the War of 1812. He also did a considerable amount of trade with the Indians of the region. When Mary Hoover Sheets died at age 102 yrs 1 mo on March 15, 1894, she was the oldest living resident in Union, OH. The last practicing Sheets riflemaker in Union was Asher Sheets (1838-1902), son of Henry and grandson of Martin, who is still listed as a gunsmith in the 1900 Census. You'll find the cache nearby one of the Sheets grave markers.
