Geocache Description:

This is intended as a quick cache and dash for Filton Abbey Wood station.

The cache was inspired when we found Side Tracked – Patchway (GC1JY0R) and Side Tracked – Bristol Parkway Station (GC1H6C1) which are both not far away. As we use Filton Abbey Wood station most days and thought it would be a good place to locate a cache in the Side Tracked theme.

Side Tracked caches are located near to railway stations to provide a distraction for weary travellers; however you can also complete this cache as a drive-by.

Filton Abbey Wood station was purpose-built for one reason only, and that was for commuter transport to the vast MoD office complex there. Maybe the fact that it was built by the MoD in 1996 accounts for the bleak, utilitarian design. A third track and platform was added in 2004, the station has covered shelters on each platform, but apart from that - no refreshments, no toilets, no station staff, no ticket office, there is a ticket machine that sometimes works. There’s no taxi rank handy either, or bus terminus. If you end up there for any reason be sure to have someone waiting with a car. If you have to change trains there and will be waiting for any length of time be sure to have snack with you and hope you don’t need a toilet in a hurry! We give it no stars at all, except it is a functional station and serves the purpose of decanting employees of the MOD every morning and evening although most prefer to use their cars.

Railway buffs can find details and photos of the station here :-

There is a small free car park and bus turn around on the Filton side of the track accessed via the oddly named “Emma Chris Way”. The cache has been placed on this side and we recommend approaching from this direction to avoid any security scares. It also means this can be a quick drive by cache and dash without using the station. Cyclist can access this cache but you should dismount. Access is 24 hours, wheel chair and child buggy friendly. The area is well lit at night but often deserted and is some distance from occupied housing so normal care should be observed if alone.

The cache is a 35mm canister of the magnetic type and contains only a roll log book and pencil.
