Rokiškio senamiestis - raiškiausias ir vertingiausias
klasicizmo epochos urbanistikos paminklas Lietuvoje. Miesto centras
staciakampio, senoji dalis - radialinio plano. Turine erdvine
kompozicija susiformavo iki XX a. pradžios. Aikšteje
vyrauja iki XX a. vidurio pastatyti muriniai ir mediniai pastatai.
Rokiškio dvaro rumai (krašto muziejus)
Pastatyti 1801 metais klasicizmo stiliumi pagal nežinomo
architekto projekta. 1905 metais centrinis pastatas buvo
perstatytas pagal architektu K.Jankovskio ir P.Lilpopo projekta ir
igijo baroko elementu.
Nuo 1952 metu dvaro rumuose isikures Rokiškio krašto
muziejus, kuriame yra apie 60 tukst. eksponatu. Muziejuje veikia
dvaro buities, unikaliu L.Šepkos medžio darbu, dailes
ekspozicijos. 1997 metais Rokiškio krašto muziejui
suteikta teise kurti Aukštaitijos meno galerija.
Nuo 1995 metu cia isikurusi ir Aukštaiciu akademijos
buveine.
Rokiskis region, which is in the very northeastern part of
Lithuania comprises a territory bigger than 180 thousand of.Ha or
2,8 percent of the territory of the whole country. It has a
population bigger than 40 thousand citizens, 92 percent of which
are Lithuanians. The forests, which are considered the richest for
the hunters in the whole country, comprise an area of 46,2 thousand
ha in the region. There are 99 lakes, 62 ponds, 42 rivers flow
through the region. There are more than 300 immovable cultural
values in the region. The landscape is decorated by 27 mounds and
barrows, 19 church ensembles, 17 former manor homesteads. Special
attention of the many tourists is paid to one of the biggest and
the richest museums in the country – Rokiskis regional
museum, located in the former Rokiskis manor estate, Rokiskis St.
Matthew's church – the most beautiful neo-gothic ensemble in
Lithuania, Rokiskis St. Matthew's church the most explicit and
valuable urban monument in the country – Rokiskis city
Independence square. The impressive cultural heritage of the region
encourages the cultural workers of the region to carry out active
work. Quite many regional, republican and international festivals,
concerts, events, plain-airs, exhibitions-competitions, take place
here, the festival of professional Lithuanian theatres continues
for the third decade already, for which there are no analogous
events. Hunters' festival in Rokiskis Cultural center of
Aukstaitija region is being established in Rokiskis. Educational
needs in the region are met by 9 nurseries-kindergartens, 2 primary
schools, 11 basic schools, 4 secondary schools, 4 high schools,
youth school and the adult training center. Furthermore, there are
music, choreography schools, schoolchildren's creation and work
center, 4 art education and physical training as well as sports
centers. There is a higher education non- university school in
Rokiskis, i. e. Rokiskis subsidiary of Panevezys College, where
teachers of English and German languages and music (with organ
specialization) are prepared, as well as culture managers. The
healthcare of the region is taken care of by the initial healthcare
center, psychiatric health center, regional hospital, R. Burnickas
general practitioner doctor's office, 15 private stomatology
offices, 11 community medicine centers, 6 ambulatories, public
health center, 2 nursing and secondary treatment hospitals.
Moreover, there is the republican psychiatry hospital in the center
of the region. In 2004 there were five and a half hundred of
operating business subjects in Rokiskis region, 11 percent of which
were industrial companies. The most important production of
industrial companies was milk, butter, cheese, bread and pie
production, fruit and vegetable products, peat, rakes-rollers and
flax. More than 34 percent of the regional companies are engaged in
retail and wholesale sales. The region is the leading one in
Panevezys district according to the amount of the produced and sold
production. The production of food, textile and timber industries
prevail. Rokiskis is known as a country of farmers from old times.
The agricultural land in the region comprises 101 thousand 248 ha,
almost 18 thousand of cattle is kept. There are about 50 diary
farms, specializing in the field. Until the beginning of 2005 there
were more than 2 thousands of farms and 30 agriculture companies
were registered. Citizens of Rokiskis celebrate the 500 anniversary
of the city (1999) The center of the region is Rokiskis city where
about 16 thousand of people live. The territory of the city –
1107,5 ha, 58 ha of the latter are parks and plants. The distance
from Rokiskis to Vilnius is 156 km, to Kaunas – 167 km, to
Ryga – 160 km, to Daugpilis – 78 km, to Panevezys
– 85 km. The municipality of Rokiskis region maintains
international relations with the municipalities of Latvia, Poland,
Estonia, Germany, Russian and Italy.
