A number of days were spent by a group of us in a wilderness camp in the Hwange National Park. When finalising matters prior to our departure, permission was requested from the regional manager in the area for us to place a cache at one of the public areas in the reserve. Permission was granted for us to place the cache at Mandavu Dam. The regional manager also undertook to perform maintenance on the cache when and if this becomes necessary.
Named after a local Nhanzwa chief, Hwange National Park is the largest Park in Zimbabwe occupying roughly 14 650 square kilometers. It is located in the northwest corner of the country about one hour south of the Victoria Falls. It boasts a tremendous selection of wildlife with over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species recorded. The elephants of Hwange are world famous and the Park’s elephant population is one of the largest in the world. Mandavu Dam, situated approximately 15 kilometres from Sinamatella, provides a beautiful viewing hide to watch animals coming to drink. The bird life around the dam is also prolific. The site consists of an enclosed picnic area and a small ablution block with running water. Groups of up to 10 people may camp overnight at these areas but the sites are also open to all visitors during daytime. The dam is in an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) for black and white rhino. Major species to be seen are both the black and white rhinoceros, elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, hippopotamus and crocodiles.
