Humanity has often been intrigued by the question of what lies
beyond our world. Scientists have spent their lives looking for
answers, and artists have allowed their imagination to explore the
possibilities of what may be out there. Billions have been spent
exploring the known universe for any trace of evidence to support
that Earth is not the only planet capable of supporting life. So
far the search has found nothing to prove that we are not alone.
Yet, perhaps the answers we are looking for lie not in the great
expanses of the universe, but rather right here on earth...just not
THIS earth.
While often referred to as a 'parallel universe' in popular
literature, a dimension is more accurately an additional coordinate
axis beyond the three spatial axes (up/down, left/right and
forward/backward) with which we are familiar. Theories on what
exactly those additional axes are, or could be, varies greatly.
Time is often referred to as the '4th dimension' and the
possibilities of Time Travel has been explored in both scientific
theory as well as popular literature. Some of the other axes that
have been explored in literature include, but by no means are
limited to: Probability, Symmetry and Perception. The common theme
explored in all of these theories is that, if we could somehow find
a way to traverse these dimensions who knows what we could find.
Duplicate worlds, the same as our own, where the same people are
living the same lives as us; or perhaps we would find a totally
different world, changed by some action that never occurred on our
planet...or perhaps...we would find nothing at all. The
possibilities truly are endless.
With the above in mind, perhaps what we have long been searching
for, has in fact, been right under our noses. Maybe Earth is the
only planet in the universe that can sustain life, but perhaps
there are infinite versions of the same Earth, in the same place on
the traditional spatial axes, that will only be found once we
unlock the mystery of how we travel to these new dimensions.
