Geocache Description:

A forty five minute to one hour diversion from Motorway Driving... And a very unusual location steeped in history but very different today I guess from what it looked like years ago.

This is the location of an ancient stretch of road called Heol Y Sheet which formed part of PORTWAY, which used to be the main road that connected Cardiff, Cowbridge, Kenfig, Aberavon and Neath centuries before the advent of the A48 or the M4!

This stretch of road which led up to the top of Stormy Down lost much of its significance when Kenfig was lost in the 15th century and as such was only really used for local traffic.

The main route East to West was then diverted through Pyle.

Today Heol y Sheet has been diverted due to the conflict between the ancient and the modern... Portway v M4. The walk is very peaceful even though the heavy flow of M4 traffic is very close indeed.

On all the occasions I have been here I have not seen a soul!

The walk to the nano and then to the offset is very easy and I would have rated it as a 1 Terrain, but regrettably I do not think a wheelchair could get through the barrier placed across the path that allows only walkers past. Sorry.

Parking is possible at either end of the path, I have always opted for the option at the South side of the M4. It is both easy to get to and has always been quiet.

There are lots of other paths nearby here. I may set other caches there soon taking in other aspects of the local history.

I did try to place a bigger box at the final, capable of holding bigger trackables... I will keep an eye on it and if possible replace it with a larger container!
