Geocache Description:

A sandwich sized camoed Lock & Lock. The cache is not among any of the ruins so please do not disturb them.

It's hard to believe that such an interesting spot is so close to a busy highway. Park in the Brickworks Office Complex and you will be only a few hundred feet from GZ. Hike just a short distance and you will be taken back in time to the industrial age. Welcome to the remains of Atlantic Brick Manufacturing Company. Originally known as Industrial Brick Company, the first kilns were erected in 1882. Later the company became known as Atlantic Brick Manufacturing Company. This company was famous for its pale yellow or blond structural bricks. This was the time frame when many of the grand hotels in Atlantic City were built. The brickworks supplied 2 million the bricks for the famous Traymore Hotel. Which was built at Illinois Ave & the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. The brickworks operated sporadically until the 1930's. Production and employment would rise and fall to to various factors. A strike in the Pennsylvania coal mines, clay shortages and fire all contributed to the sporadic nature of the business. At it's peak in 1902 125 men worked at the plant compared to a low of 60 in 1927. By 1930 the the brickworks halted production of bricks. Around that time the West American Charcoal and Coal Company took over and began production of charcoal. That operation lasted until the 1960's. Smoke from the stacks would at times back up traffic on Route 40. Finally the plant was probably used until the 1970's for storage for glassware by glass purveyors from Millville. Now all that remains are the ruins of the kilns as Mother Nature slowly reclaims the area. Click for more info on these ruins
