Geocache Description:

Kensington Town Hall Ghost

In 1964, before the Town Hall was built, this area was used as a temporary coach park, with a disused Cold War bunker in one corner with the top of its roof slab at ground level. On 25th November civil defence worker David Sutton discovered the naked body of a woman hidden under rubbish on this roof. She turned out to be one Margaret McGowan, the fifth victim of a never-caught serial killer nicknamed ‘Jack The Stripper’, who murdered six women in 1964 and distributed their nude bodies round west London. All were asphyxiated in an ‘unusual manner’ which the police were coy about elaborating on.

Subsequently Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall, designed by the architect Basil Spence, was built on the site in the early 1970’s (it is one of the few buildings in Britain constructed with modular metric bricks, an idea that fell by the wayside), including a large hall for public performances which you can see as the large windowless wing forming one side of the courtyard. Its suite of artiste’s dressing rooms and toilets, under the stage, are on the exact site where Margaret McGowan’s body was found. It is said that people changing in these dressing rooms after late performances have heard strange choking noises from the toilets, which prove to be empty.

The double doors, down two or three steps, are the artiste’s entrance, and lead directly into this haunted suite of dressing rooms under the stage. Put your ear to the door, who knows?

After that somewhat THEATRICAL LECTURE you might need to de-ice your car!
