Geocache Description:

A short multi around the former church of St Mary Magdalene, Writhlington.

The church of St Mary Magdalene formerly served the parish of Writhlington, an area which thrived during the heyday of the Somerset coalfield. The nearby Lower Writhlington colliery only closed in 1973, the last pit in the area to do so. The area is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, from which more than 1,400 insect fossils have been recovered, including the world’s oldest known damselfly. Population reduction in the area made the church redundant; it was closed in 1976 and is now a private house (please respect the privacy of the occupants whilst completing the cache). Both it and the nearby rectory are Grade II listed.

The start point is in the graveyard, which is still in the care of the local council. At the posted coordinates you will find a headstone belonging to a very unlucky and inappropriately named young man. On the headstone is a 6 figure number, ABCDEF.

The cache can be found nearby at
N 51° 17.(E)(F/A)((B+D+E)/C) W 002° 25.(C+D)(F-A)(C-F)
Note: the cache is not in the graveyard. The coordinates might be bit out due to tree cover. The container is a small plastic box with room for coins and very small TBs and swaps. There is a badge for the FTF.

It is physically possible to park close to the published coordinates, but only by obstructing something, so we don’t recommend it. Otherwise, the nearest parking is in St Mary’s Rise, from where the church can be reached via a narrow, steep tarmac road with no pavement. The steepness of the slope probably makes it unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Please take care in icy conditions and with small children.

Alternatively, for a longer, more pleasant walk, the site can be reached via the bridleway which turns off the Radstock – Shoscombe cycle path at N 51° 17.718 W 002° 26.037 (nearest parking Waterloo Road car park). Could be muddy in wet weather. On your way past you could do Topcat & Delboy’s “Off the Beaten Track” parts 1 & 2.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
