Geocache Description:


This geocache is along the open fire road on the Del Mar Mesa.

It's in one of the few areas that is not currently closed to all users. The land in the area is a part of the city's Multiple Species Conservation Project, home to protected species like the San Diego horned lizard and Anna's hummingbird, vernal pools and some of the last areas of the densely growing shrub chaparral in Southern California. The vernal pools are the seasonal bodies of water that spring up after a series of intense storms and hang on for weeks or months. The pools are home to a rich mix of plants and animals, including the San Diego vernal pool fairy shrimp.

That shrimp, among other species, has pit different groups of people with different interests against each other when it comes to debating the future of the mesa. I hope they come to a compromise because the trails up here are absolute gems and I would hate to lose them.

There is no need to cross the fence to get the geocache.
