Geocache Description:

Golden Cross Mining Walk

The Golden Cross Mine site is in the Waiekauri Valley at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula.
After producing 20.5 tonnes of Gold and 52 tonnes of Silver between 1991 and 1998 (worth $430m at 2001 prices) the operation became the first modern mine in New Zealand to successfully move into planned closure and final rehabilition.

The area has some nice walks around the new lake formed by the tailings storage facility. Also a walk down to the Maratoto Valley Road (1.5 hour )

The tailing pond has been rehabilitated and is the home to several species of wading birds and waterfowl.

Gates closed Dusk to Dawn

Come and enjoy with the family
