The King's Stables is an archaeological site in county Armagh.
Dating back to the lake bronze age Ca.1000 BC, the King's Stables is a man-made pool found in the townland of Tray, near Armagh.
Tradition has it that the Ancient Kings of Ulster, living in Navan Fort, 1km east of the stables, watered their horses and washed their chariots in the pool.
Excavations in 1975 discovered Late Bronze Age clay moulds for bronze leaf shaped swords, pottery and items of worked bone and wood. Also found were 214 animal bones and a human skull. These finds from the bottom of the pool also suggest it was a place for sacrifical purposes.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL : the pool is deep and slippery with steep sides, stay outside the bank and well away from the edge.
The cache is a small box wrapped in black tape. When placed it contained logbook, pencil, pen, sharpener and some small swaps. There is room for small TBs and geocoins.
This cache would be easily combined with the nearby cache at Navan Fort GCZ0PG.
From Navan Fort proceed west and follow the road for 500m, turn right at brown sign for King's Stables. Follow this road for a further 700m. Parking is available at the site in the form of a layby.
The King's Stables is a short walk from layby via grassy pathways which during wet weather may be soft underfoot. It is not suitable for wheelchairs.
