in our disclaimer.
This is the 25th and final cache in our series of ghost Caches and is located near the remains of the station of Piercebridge.
From 1832 there were numerous proposals to build a branch line from Barnard Castle to the Stockton & Darlington Railway but these met stiff opposition from successive Dukes of Cleveland who owned most of the land around Barnard Castle. Eventually a Bill was approved in 1854 for a line from a junction with the S & D at Darlington to Barnard Castle.
The station building has been demolished and the track bed infilled. The station house which stood to the rear of the platform adjacent to the level crossing still stands and is a private residence. A substantial goods shed and other associated buildings have been renovated as a separate private residence on the west side of the level crossing. The station was on the east side of the level crossing had two platforms with the main station building and stationmaster's house on the westbound (down) platform and a brick waiting shelter on the eastbound (up) platform. The signal box was located on the west side of the level crossing. A goods yard was sited on the west side of the level crossing which included a loop siding with two sidings branching from it running either side of a goods bank with one of them passing through the goods shed. A further siding to the south served the coal drops. The goods yard had a full range of buildings which would have included a goods shed, weigh bridge office, porters cabin, coal office and possibly a garage.
Parking is available right beside the cache, but please don't park on the B6275, all will be clear when you get there.
