Geocache Description:

A family-friendly cache hidden along Old Ferry Road in historic Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, south of Summersville, West Virginia.

For more details on the history, attractions and facilities of this fine state park, please visit their official web site: CLICK HERE.

To get the the park from U.S. 19, go west on State Route 129 for about 5 miles. Then turn left onto Carnifex Ferry Road. From there it is one mile to the park. There are several parking areas, but the one closest to the cache is at the picnic shelters & playground. From there, either hike Patterson Trail, which runs beside the Picnic Overlook, or head directly south across the field toward picnic shelters #3 & #4. Old Ferry Road goes between the two shelters and combines with Patterson Trail just beyond. Just follow your GPS from there. The cache is inside the park boundary and should be an easy find. If you come to the sign that says you are leaving the State Park, then you have gone too far.
In summer, it is less than 1/2 mile to the cache from where you park. In winter, when the gate to the picnic area is closed, it will be necessary to park at the gate, on County Route 23 (Eakin Road) where Patterson Trail crosses the road, or at Patterson House, and the distance to the cache will be as much as a mile.

The cache is in a 1.1 liter Lock & Lock type container with an orange West Virginia State Parks "Official Geocache" sticker. Initial contents are: a flashlight, eyeglass repair kit, 2 glass "gems", 2 facial cream samples, flat magnet, mini mechanical pencil, flip fan, hand cleaner towelette, 2 wheat cents in holders, and a log book with pen.

SPECIAL NOTE: The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources discourages off-trail hiking in state parks as it negatively impacts the environment. This cache is hidden no more than 25 feet off the trail, so please refrain from taking shortcuts or engaging in unnecessary bushwhacking during your search.
