Oxted Oddments 1 Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Long Man: I have made two requests for this cache to be maintained and the listing is still disabled. I feel the owner has had sufficient time to carry out the required maintenance, but has failed to do so.

Because of this I'm archiving the cache.

LONG VERSION -
Oxted is a lovely town divided in 2 by the railway line (or 3 if you include Old Oxted, partitioned by the A25). This is the first of a couple of circular walks looking at interesting locations around Oxted. The cache is only a micro. The fun is in the walk and finding the unusual container used for the cache.

There are a lot of parking possibilities around Oxted but please watch the time limits. (The on street parking co-ordinates have a 1 hour limit.) If full, you can often find a space near the railway on Station Approach - N51º15.480, W0º0.307. There are also public toilets here.

Walk takes under 1 hour but you may wish to spend longer.
1) Park on the street at N51º15.455, W0º0.420 (note time limit) or at the park N51º15.495, W0º0.418 (Open until dusk for users of the Park). Master Park is home to football, cricket and tennis. (visit link) ) It also hosts events such as the Donkey Derby; Carnival; and is on the Oxted Pram Race route! Walk towards the Tennis Pavilion. How many courts at Oxted Tennis Club? Answer = “A”

2) Continue walking towards a path at the bottom of the park. N51º15.508, W0º0.570. A small tributary stream of the River Eden runs alongside. (visit link) ) The path takes you to St. Mary’s Church. Sadexploration’s Oxted cache is nearby (visit link) . Walk to the Lych gate. N51º15.534 W0º00.520. It was erected for the Silver Jubilee of HM King George “B”.

Continue through the gate, up to the church and then walk down to Oxted Community Hall with its solar panels. N51º15.568, W0º0.436

3) Cross the road and walk along Bluehouse Lane. You will see a bridge and sign to Oxted Station. N51º15.569, W0º00.396 Bridge ID number is SCUI - 5”C”8

4) If you continued along Bluehouse Lane you would come to the lovely Barn Theatre. (visit link) ) But today we will cross the road, pass the Blue House Lane Social Centre and walk along Station Road East to Harry’s Youth Centre N51º15.549, W0º00.298. Here the Gas Holder rears its head – a source of controversy in Oxted. What date was Harry’s House built? ”NDDM”.

5) Keep walking and arrive at the Station. If you continued down the hill you would pass Whiskywhiskymac's "Oxted Meridian". (visit link) However, a surprise awaits between N51º15.499, W0º00.259 and N51º15.466, W0º00.304. Geoffrey Howe MP opened this feature in 198”E”.

6) You are now walking down Station Road West. At N51º15.436, W0º00.361 you will find The Screen at Oxted (visit link) ) – a charming cinema on 2 levels. What is the door number of the double glass doors entrance? “F”

7) If you were to go left up Hoskins Road, you would come to Tandridge Leisure Centre Pool (visit link) ) and a Red Cross building. But we are continuing down the hill to N51º15.421, W0º00.393. This oddly shaped collection of flats – The Hoskins – has an interesting past. (visit link) ) In one of its uses, it was a split level public house and hotel called The Hoskins Arms - dating back to 1886. (visit link) ) If you count the entrance block area as one side of this shape – how many sides would a plan view of this building have? Number of sides = ”ZG”

8) Walking round to N51º15.419, W0º00.435 we arrive at a Remembrance Memorial for Oxted residents. How many WW1 Bakers are listed? Answer = “H”

9) On the left is the Police Station and at N51º15.398, W0º00.442 is a bus shelter constructed to commemorate the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The bus caught from this stop is the 4”I”O

10) From N51º15.367, W0º00.520 you can see the Royal British Legion (visit link) ) on your left and the cricket pavilion on your right. The park is also shared with The Oxted and District Football Club. (visit link) ) N51º15.360, W0º00.532.When was it founded? 189”J”

11) Walk down to check the score and practice in the batting nets. (visit link) ) N51º15.386, W0º00.631. The score board is dedicated to Harold Smith who was born in 19”KL”.

12) Well, like the minute hand of the clock returning to 12, we need to get you back to where it all started. Walk along the path towards the tennis courts to look for the cache.

Please BEWARE of any McEnroe style Muggles. MAX STEALTH REQUIRED!

The cache is SECURED BY WIRE. Please open top in situ.
