You are in Sundance, WY where Harry Longabaugh known as The Sundance Kid got his name. He is ours, and even though he was an outlaw, we claim him proudly. He borrowed a horse and tack in northern Crook County, and well, he didn’t tell the man that owned the horse that he was borrowing it. So he became a resident of the Crook County jail for 18 months until the Wyoming governor granted him a pardon. His life of being a law breaker continued in fine fashion after his time in the Crook County jail. He joined up with Butch Cassidy and several other renegades and became known as the wild bunch. About this time is when he started being called the Sundance Kid, his outlaw friends teased him about being locked up in Sundance. Then he married, (at least we think they married,) Etta Place and she, the Kid and Butch set out for South America when the Pinkertons kept getting closer and closer to their trail. And word has it that Butch and Sundance met their demise in South America at the hands of some sharp shooting federales! Others claim Butch and Sundance gave the law the slip and made their way back to the US to live long and secretive lives. No one knows what became of Etta, but I would like to think she joined up with Sundance, and they lived happily ever after. Now, it really depends on who’s story you want to take to the bank, some say Harry Longabaugh was a devil man, killing and maiming all over the west. Others say he was a fine young man that took up with the wrong crowd, and made some really lousy choices. Whatever you want to believe, that is up to you. But we recommend you sit a spell here with the Kid, and try to imagine what he was really like in the 1890s. THE ORIGINAL OWNERS OF THIS CACHE GRACIOUSLY LET US "ADOPT" IT SO WE COULD USE IT FOR OUR GEOCACHE ROUNDUP. WE ADDED THE ABOVE DESCRIPTION, BUT WANTED TO MAKE SURE AND LEAVE THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION ALSO: This is a fun educational cache. Additionally I want you to take a picture and post it if would be so inclined. We promise he won’t hurt you. The cache is in a tight area so a Geocaching TOTT or someone with long skinny arms is recommended. The museum is well worth the visit just north of this location, in the big building. We’ll leave the big story of Butch Cassidy and Sundance to Paul Newman and Robert Redford. But the Sundance kid (AKA Harry Longabaugh) had his first known brush with the law was near here in Crook county for stealing a horse.In 1887, Harry Longabaugh was convicted of horse theft and sentenced to 18 months in the Sundance, Wyoming, jail. Because of this jail time he was called the Sundance Kid. Longabaugh likely met Butch Cassidy (real name Robert Leroy Parker) sometime after Parker was released from prison around 1896. They formed the "Wild Bunch Gang." Together with the other members of the gang, they performed the longest string of successful train and bank robberies in American and Old West history. Little is known of Longabaugh's exploits prior to his riding with Parker. Longabaugh and Logan used a log cabin at what is now Old Trail Town in Cody, Wyoming, as a hide-out before they robbed a bank in Red Lodge, Montana. Parker, Longabaugh and other desperados met at another cabin brought to Old Trail Town from the Hole-in-the-Wall country in north central Wyoming. Congrats to mikEdub FTF!
