The Cutts got it's name because a passage was cut in the river's bedrock to by-pass rapids thus making the river navigable for boats. The cuts in the rock also enabled the trapping of salmon. Prior to the work, which started in 1612, goods had to be labouriously transferred between vessels one above and one below the rapids.
Locally this stretch of river is known as the Salmon Leap, where salmon can still be seen leaping during their migration upstream to spawn.
Watch out also for Grey Herons and Cormorants on the look out for a spot of dinner!
There is parking available at the lock, but if the gates are closed for any reason, there is a small gate where you can enter from the roadside.
PLEASE return the cache where you found it, it is easily seen from the road and footpath which runs along the other side of the wall and needs to be replaced correctly to help it blend in a bit better.
