Each year we head up to Robinson Canyon for our annual Mother's Day Hike and thought there should be a cache placed here to direct others to this beautiful place. The canyon is located on the LT Murray Wildlife Recreation Area. The cache is placed outside the gate to the rec. area, but is accessible only MAY 2nd to OCTOBER 31st.
***Since updating the cache we have modified it to "MacGyver's Mother's Day Cache" because that was one of our fav childhood shows. We recently introduced it to our kids and they love it too. All items placed in here are things MacGyver could creatively use.
The terrain rating is 1.5 as it is off the side of a dirt/gravel road and may be out of reach for 'cachers on wheels. It is not meant to be difficult, just to bring people to the area for enjoyment. We've included the link to the site for more information.
Special Note: Nov. 1-May 1 this area is closed to protect the elk herds. BUT the cache is placed OUTSIDE the gate and is accessible year-round. Also, we have been told a WA Dept of Fish and Wildlife Vehicle Permit is required, but believe parking outside the gate does not.
To get here:
East from Seattle take exit 101 for Thorp. Turn right onto Thorp Hwy. for less than a mile, then veer right onto Killmoor Rd. Follow for 2.5 miles and take right onto Robinson Canyon Rd.
From Ellensburg, head out onto the Thorp Hwy via the I-90 on-ramp at Exit 108. Take a left onto Thorp Hwy. near the KOA Campground. Follow the hwy for less than 2 miles and take a left onto Robinson Canyon Rd.
Robinson Canyon Rd. will turn to primitive road within 1.5 miles. You will then reach the gate that reads "L.T. Murray State Wildlife Recreation Area." You may park outside the gate and will find the cache just a few yards back.
BEWARE of snakes. We often see them sunning themselves on this road. Don't forget to bring along your trusty "snake stick."
Original Cache contents:
^Red, log book, pen
^2AA batteries (energy source)
^Maraca (makeshft bomb container)
^roll electrical tape (for obvious reasons)
^black playdoh (putty compound)
^flashlight (handy for collapsed caves)
^reflective stickers
^Pokemon cards (I'm sure Mac could come up with some diversion with these)
^a empty bag ("the bag is for what [you] find on the way" MacGyver Episode-first season)
After finding the cache, If you wish, you may enter the gated area via car (need permit) or on foot. Don't forget to CLOSE THE GATE.
It is a beautiful area for all sorts of recreation. After entering the gate, you will often see groups of riders on horse heading up the south trails. Keep going for a 1/4 mile and you will reach the end of the road and where Robinson Canyon begins. You can head up the rocky creek bed or up either canyon wall. The trails are pretty clear or refer to a hiking book. You will see a variety of wildlife including elk, mule deer, birds, butterflies, frogs, and snakes (inclduing rattlers). We have attached some fun photos of the wildlife we have encountered. Look closely as they are camouflaged well.
