Brodhead was platted, one mile square, in the spring of 1856, and land to be occupied by the the railway and depot grounds were immediately marked.
On September 15, 1857, the first train arrived. The train's arrival was met by band music and a huge crowd tooting horns, and cheering.
Six passenger cars and four freight cars had met the Milwaukee train at Janesville, and everyone on the train returned to Brodhead for a dinner. The dance which followed was furnished music by the Brodhead Band, the Monroe Cornet Band, and a Clarence Martial Band.
For years to come the depot served as a community house for the folks of Brodhead, for many special gatherings, outside political lectures and other activities.
Today, the depot is the showcase for the Brodhead Historical Society Museum. Inside are permanent and rotating exhibits showing artifacts, photographs and documents from Brodhead's rich past. The museum is open Memorial Day through Labor Day: Wednesdays, weekends, and holidays from 1 - 4 pm. A locomotive and caboose outside the depot are also open for exploration. Veterans Memorial Park is full of history dating back to the Civil War.
Permission for this cache has been obtained by Green County Tourism from the Brodhead Historical Society and Wade Boegli, Director of Parks and Recreation. There is a 50cal ammo cannister inside the depot. It has been stocked with all kinds of things just for the taking. There is a copy of the book Depot of Green County in the ammo can for the first person to grab the coupon from outside container and present it to the depot staff.
As there is a serious muggle problem in this park, PLEASE make sure that the container very well hidden. If it is visable to the naked eye, they will muggle the cache. Thanks!
Congrats to rcflyer2242 on his FTF and grabbing the coupon, Enjoy the book and the museum.
