During November 1939, the Hon, J.V. Fairbairn MP, Minister for Air, obligated Australia to the Empire Air Training Scheme. In order to meet its quota of aircrew, the RAAF established many training units throughout Australia. One of these was No 2 Air Observers School at Mount Gambier.
The unit was typical of the many raised at the time using civilian airports at towns in every state. Training was not the only role undertaken by the RAAF from Mount Gambier, from where aircraft also flew anti-submarine and convoy escort patrols.
The cache location was originally Building 16, The Sergeants Mess (map in the current terminal on the wall)
