markybee: Visited today to check on the works at the bottom of the steps whilst checking a new cache nearby sadly works are still ongoing and the path closed.
In light of the works on going at the bottom of the steps which has led to the footpath across the bottom of the steps which looks fairly long term, I have decided to archive this cache. Once the work is finished I may replace it with another further along the top of rock walk.
On behalf of Lord Hutton (the original CO) and myself I would like to thank all finders who made the climb up all those steps [:D]

Geocache Description:

A Glimpse of Torbay

Rock Walk is a cliffside walk in Torquay, running around the headland from Fleet Street to Shedden Hill, above Torbay Road. The area was a warren of paths, bridges and steps behind a screen of trees and shrubs. Following an inspection in 2007, the trees were removed in early 2008 as a preventative measure to prevent rock falls from unstable parts of the cliff. Unfortunately this revealed more serious problems than were previously thought, necessitating substantial stabilisation works, leading to the closure of virtually all the footpaths and the partial closure of the dual carriageway below. There was a considerable local outcry at the loss of the trees, but more suitable varieties will be replanted and the walkways restored (some of them: 500 syringes were discovered during the clearance. It is not thought that the Council wish to restore that facility). The cache is located on the one remaining footpath at one extremity of the Rock Walk area. A pleasant view over Torre Abbey Meadows. Parking available at either end, but if you park in Warren Road, the clue will be hard work! Rock Walk reopened in October 2010

WARNING: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE FOOTPATH ACROSS THE TOP OF ROCK WALK HAS BEEN CLOSED OFF AT THE SHEDDON HILL ROAD END. YOU CAN ACCESS THE STEPS FROM WARREN ROAD A LITTLE FURTHER UP THE HILL AND COME DOWN THE STEPS. (For this purpose I've added an extra hint, but will remove it once the path re-opens, if it re-opens)
