The cache is on an old farm track a short walk from the village of Auchmithie. It is an easy find and particularly kid friendly. Although the track is fairly rough it is easily negotiable with an all terrain buggy.
Auchmithie is a wee fishing village in Angus. The fishing has gone now sadly, all that remains is a broken down harbour. The stony beach was one of the things we loved about this place. The sound of the waves crashing on the beach when the tide is coming in is amazing. There are a variety of birds including cormorants and puffins nesting in the 120 foot high red sandstone cliffs which rise behind the beach.
It was from Auchmithie that the famous Arbroath Smokie originated, however at the end of the 19th century, the fishing industry in Arbroath was declining, so those in power in Arbroath offered the Auchmithie fisherfolk housing in the fit o' the toon, as well as the use of a much better harbour. Much of the auchmithie population moved out then and took with them the smokie recipe. Sir Walter Scott stayed in the Waverley Hotel in Auchmithie and describs Auchmithie in his novel The Antiquary (1816), under the name 'Musslecrag.
If you want to relive the old life in Auchmithie then a visit to the "HAAR festival" on the first week of September is a must. There are re-enactments throughout the day culminating in the fishers wedding procession in the afternoon. If you feel brave enough to go racing into the sea carrying someone on your back then entering the muckelbackit race is for you.... but its not for the faint hearted.
The village of Auchmithie was originally a farming settlement and its to this end we have placed this cache up here overlooking the village. The idea is to take and place anything relating to a farm.... it started with some farm animals and tractors but let your imagination go lets see what variety we can get.
Its in an average sized tupperware box.
oh be carefull this is a fairly popular walk for muggles!
