Windmill Land is a name coined by Allen Clarke for the Fylde and Over Wyre. His love affair with windmills started from his first glimpse of one at Treales near Preston, from a train carriage window, on a cheap day trip for poor children, organised by a mission in Bolton around 1870. More information at the final bonus cache GC1RD59 - Windmill Land - Weeton (Bonus)
There were at one time over 40 windmills, watermills and post (peg) mills in the Fylde and Over Wyre. Now there are only 10 left, this series of caches takes you on a trip around them and points to a final cache hidden at the location of an eleventh.
Pilling Windmill is now a private home.
Built in 1808, the windmill is a prominent skyline feature in the village of Pilling. In 1866, the sails were removed & the windmill converted to run from a coal fired steam engine. The mill had ceased working by the late 1930's and fell into a state of disrepair. During the 1960's the mill was rescued and made available for private residence. Although partial restoration occurred through the following decades, the biggest changes have been seen over the last couple of years. On a memorable day in February 2007, the windmill was finally topped with a traditional “Lancashire boat top” cap
The cache is a small click lock box suitable for small swaps and TBs hidden about 5 mins walk along a footpath which gives good views of the windmill.
